When The Blues Band formed in 1979, they did more than play the blues, they helped generate a renewed worldwide interest in the music. Fronted by Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness from Manfred Mann, the line up boasted an exceptional pedigree. McGuinness played with Eric Clapton in The Roosters, while singer and guitarist Dave Kelly had toured with US greats Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker. Bassist Gary Fletcher and drummer Hughie Flint, formerly of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, completed a group whose collective experience set them apart from the start. Repertoire Records are very proud to present this 45th Anniversary 4 CD box set, which is the most extensive archive of the band ever assembled, charting their rise from the pub circuit to major festival stages. Boom Boom 1980 includes selections from their first three albums, plus full sets from intimate shows at London’s Hope & Anchor and the Top Rank, Sheffield, in 1981, along with previously unheard live session tracks for Capital Radio and their triumphant Glastonbury set in 1985, featuring both Hughie Flint and Rob Townsend on drums. With 75 tracks, of which a staggering 55 are previously unreleased recordings, it is a treasure trove even for the band's most ardent fans. The box set includes liner notes written by respected musicologist Chris Welch. Boom Boom 1980 is the definitive celebration of a band that proved the blues was not just a historical artefact but a living, breathing force.
