Whiter Shade Of Pale

The complete 1978 album from Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte’s celebrated studio collective.

• A bold fusion of live musicianship, sequenced electronics and late ‘70s Eurodisco.

• Features vocalist Chris Bennett, alongside Keith Forsey, Les Hurdle, Mats Björklund and Dan Wyman.

By 1978, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte had redrawn the boundaries of dance music, where the cutting edge studio technology of the time seamlessly blended with genuinely creative musicians.

A Whiter Shade Of Pale introduced US singer Chris Bennett as the sound and face of Munich Machine, bringing genuine personality to Moroder’s precision tooled electronic sound. Around Bennett was the exceptional studio team which included drummer Keith Forsey, bassist Les Hurdle, guitarist Mats Björklund and synthesizer programming genius Dan Wyman.

The album’s audacious centerpiece transforms Procol Harum’s classic into a six minute disco production, replacing the original's solemn Hammond driven grandeur with slick synthesizers, a driving rhythm section and Bennett’s laid back delivery. Critics were divided, but music fans placed the single at number 42 in the UK, while the release climbed to number 22 on Billboard’s dance and disco chart.

Across the six extended tracks, Moroder and Bellotte balance machine-like momentum with memorable melodies, supported by the instinctive feel of seasoned session players. A Whiter Shade Of Pale captures the Munich sound at full strength: polished, provocative and built for the dance floors of the era, and establishing an influential approach still deeply appreciated by today's producers, DJs and fans.
